If it was me I would try Shar, or Store for Strings. They will let you try it out and you can send it back at Store for Strings and probably Shar. I would avoid a dealer because going through a dealer you will pay 2 or 3 times more for the same quality or so I read.
Best wishes, dale

I can't have a comfortable or secure feeling when I think of buy an instrument in a music shop appearing like a supermarket or in an online shop at worse, even if it's a specialised shop like Shar and even if there's the possibility to try instruments at home. But I since I read this forum, I got the impression that's the usual way in Northern America, isn't it? And you do not feel somehow uncomfortable. Smile
I'd always go to a maker of a instrument, in case of the violin to a luthier, where I can meet the luthier in person, can be sure about the quality of the instruments, and can have a look in the workshop. I also get all the other equipment there. In Europe that's the common way... seems to be a heritage of the medieval guild system.

I would never buy an instrument without trying it first. The Shar store is actually located in my city, so I went and tried like 17 violins before buy one.

will they only get you one from shar? there's many places out there that is a LOT cheaper than shar and you can probably find something that's way better than a sofia with 3000 bucks. did you check any local violin shops around your place? i personally prefer going into ashop to tryout instruments instead of them shipping it to me, it just makes the process less complicated.

I agree completely, if you're going to spend a hunk of money for a violin I would definitely go to SEVERAL shops and try out various violins. You have a broader choice and a majority of shops will trade in you violin(stating if the violin is kept In good condition) for the full amount to apply to your next purchase. Otherwise, you might end up with a fiddle that doesn't sound good and feels awkward in your hand.

My parents said they would buy me a new violin from Shar because I was accepted into the Toledo Junior Youth Orchestra so I was wondering if any one had any suggestions. My parents will spend an absolute max. of $3000 and I was wondering what violin to get. I was looking at the Sofia models and the Collector's Series.

Any suggestions Question

I would definetly encourage you to check out some shops where you can actually play the instruments prior to buy them and have a chance to play more than one at one sitting. I recently bought a violin (though in a different price range than you are looking at) and I tried about 30 in and around my price range prior to purchase and once I had found the one I was pretty sure I wanted to get I was able to have it on trial, free of charge for an extended length of time (a few weeks) before agreeing to purchase it.

My first post was made awhile ago, so i'll update it.
I bought a violin from Shar, and you can go up and try out violins, I only live 2 hours from shar, and its probably the biggest string store where I live. I did by a Sofia Guadagnini violin, which was 3600. I really like it and it has a great sound.

DO NOT COME OUT OF NOWHERE AND POST IN ALL CAPS!!! BAD IDEA!!!

Seriously, lurk first. All caps is considered shouting, and it's rude. And besides, there's a big difference between buy from Shar and buy from ebay. I got a wonderful Hill bow from the Shar fine instrument department. They are a very reputable shop with a good trial policy serving the whole country. Know what you're yelling about before you start yelling.

Anyway, if you look at the dates, this whole thread died last year. Let it rest in peace. Necromancy is bad.

edit: while I have clearly typed all the letters in "buy-ing" the forum server has decided to truncate to "buy" in the preview and submitted post. Fantastic.

edit 2: Okay, yeah, I realize this was harsh. Please don't take it personally. This goes out to all the newer members - if the last post in a topic was from 2006, leave it alone.
