Yang Liu
YANG LIU combines dazzling technical command and sublime musicality with the philosophies of Zen study in performances that have earned him worldwide praise. A former first-prize winner of China's national violin competition and a prize-winner of the Twelfth International Tchaikovsky Violin Competition in Moscow, he has already established himself as the most important Chinese violinist of his generation. Beijing Tonight named Yang one of the best of the billion! Born in TsingTao China, Yang made his concert debut at age ten, playing Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen with the NHK orchestra in Tokyo. In a nationally televised live concert with the Central Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing, Yang performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. His concert tours have led him to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Russia, Greece, and Egypt.
In 2002, Yang made his North American debut with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra earning three nights of ovations for his performance of Paganini's First Concerto. He has also appeared as a soloist with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performing the Nielsen Violin Concerto under Robert Spano and has been a frequent soloist at the Aspen Music Festival. Yang was featured in the Starling Chamber Orchestra's Emmy award-winning public television program, Classical Quest. Yang's debut recording, Song of Nostalgia, was recently released to critical acclaim. The disc represents his broad interests, including traditional Chinese music and some of the most difficult repertoire written for the violin Yang studied with renowned Professor Yao-Ji Lin at the Central-Conservatory of Music in Beijing since age nine and continued his studies as a Starling Scholar of Dorothy Delay and Kurt Sassmannshaus in Cincinnati.
